Power out: who to call first

The advice below follows a post on the Nies Electric website. It saves a phone call to the wrong place.

STEP 1Look up and down your street. Do the neighbors have power?
STEP 2Is the whole house dark, or only a room or a zone?
STEP 3Match what you see to the lists below.

Call an electrician

  • Only your house is dark and the neighbors have power.
  • One room or one zone of the house is out.
  • Breakers trip often.
  • Lights flicker or dim at random.
  • A switch or outlet is hot to the touch or gives a small shock.
  • Extension cords stand in for permanent wiring.

Nies Electric, (320) 253-6837.

Call the power company

  • The power goes out during obvious severe weather.
  • You turned the main breaker off and on and still have nothing.
  • You see a downed line. Keep away from it.

A neighborhood outage is the power company's to fix.

Chris from Nies Electric came out as soon as his schedule allowed. After inspecting the light, his first piece of advice was astonishingly honest: he suggested we simply try replacing the LED bulb first. He said that’s what he would tell his own family and friends to do to save money before resorting to a massive replacement job. He provided us with a quote just in case, and it was significantly more reasonable than the prior company's estimate. Sure enough, it was just a dead light bulb!

Penny Xiong, Google review, November 2025 (excerpt)

We lost power to the kitchen and water heater and had called around to different electricians on a Saturday. Chris from Nies came out the same day and fixed the problem. Friendly, showed up when he said he would. Will definitely use again!

Lindsey Terrell, Google review, October 2019

I was so grateful that Nies Electric came out to test my Ceiling fan/air exchange electric connections to my fan because it wasn't working. He found the issue so now I can plan for what needs to be done. Thank you! No charge either which was greatly appreciated.

Joyce Reinert, Google review, February 2024

Chris was great to work with! Great communication, affordable pricing, and was able to get me on the schedule pretty quick. Installation was fast with no damages. I highly recommend using him for any electrical problems / situations that you have!
